Chateau Leoville Barton is one of the five St Julien second growth properties in the 1855 classification (the other four are Ducru-Beaucaillou, Gruaud Larose, Leoville Poyferre and Leoville-Las-Cases). It is one estate frequently referred to as a 'super-second'; that is, a chateau working at a quality level equal or approaching that of a first growth.

Bordeaux is the largest fine wine-making region in the world ? with 284,320 acres of A.O.C. vines ? as well as the most legendary. Its sterling reputation is built mostly on red wines.
